The APERIS Device
APERIS is a fully implantable, automated pleural drainage device that offers a safer, low-maintenance, and more comfortable alternative to external catheters by eliminating daily interventions and significantly reducing infection risk.

What It Is
APERIS is an implantable medical device designed to automatically drain excess fluid from the pleural cavity in patients with recurrent pleural effusion. It functions entirely internally, with no external ports or daily maintenance, offering a discreet, long-term alternative to traditional drainage methods like thoracentesis or tunneled catheters.
How It Works
The device sits along the top of the pleural cavity and includes a soft catheter arm that extends into a central vein (such as the subclavian vein). Fluid passively flows through a valved system that opens under pressure or volume thresholds, allowing pleural fluid to be reabsorbed by the body’s circulatory system. The internal valve ensures one-way flow and reduces the risk of infection or clot formation.
